Martin stencil Wurlitzer Alto Saxophone

Meet "Gold Martian", a truly delighful playing rare gold plate handcraft.

You are bidding on a Martin made Wurlitzer handcraft stencil pro alto sax. Serial number of 159xxx indicates it was made about 1926 based on the twenties Martin stencil serial sequence. This pre dates the later Martin stencil sequence that restarted about 1929 and includes the famous Martin made Indiana's. Also the matching number is on the original neck which is in very good condition with little finish loss. The neck cork is aged and worn and while still funcional, may need replacement in the future. These twenties Martin models are considered heavy, well made, and lush sounding. They have a thick bore and lots of brass. Note this is a rare original gold plate model as most were made in silver finish with a significant number of those being relacquered over in later years. This is not a relacquered silver finish, but an original gold plate in good to very good condition. The engraving is very nice and crisp as you would expect! There is some degradation of the finish here and there if you look up close, but overall its quite attractive from any distance away as the pictures clearly show.

There are no dents that I can see. There is a tiny ding on the back of the bell near the brace. Another on the bell rim, and some rippling here and there in the bow area and below the serial number where perhaps some dings were once removed. There is also a slight stress line just above the low B flat bell tone hole. It's not all that noticable unless you look right at it and it probably could be removed though it seems too minor to bother. I don't think its quite prominent enough to be visible in the pictures. I see little or no signs of player wear on any of the keys or thumbrests. There are no obvious major resolder repairs or signs of work on any of the keyguards or posts anywhere that I can see. There is some general gold plate finish deterioration here and there over the horn that one might expect from the number of years involved and play wear. This is not overly obvious unless you are close up and it perhaps gives it a classic vintage look that's far superior, to the Selmer vintage finish available on their new models. Original gold plate finish is intact in about the 90% range or better.

This sax was torn down, cleaned out, body and keys polished, body and keys separately treated with a powerful anti tarnish substance (better than a clear lacquer as it is transparent and non inhibiting sound-wise and doesn't peel or flake off with age and is selectably renewable as needed), then rebuilt with Mark VI style resonator pads. This horn is well along through break in, but may need regular playing by its new owner to complete that.

It plays wonderfully: a rich dark Martin tone further refined and enhanced by the real gold finish. This is a potent pro level horn! Ready for some fantastic blowin'!

No mouthpiece comes with this sax. There are four empty vintage cardboard reed holders that came in with the sax that are included. They document that this horn spent at least some time in the past in or near Glenmont, California.

If the new owner is interested in a new Runyon mouthpiece that can be added at additional cost. I have a brand new Runyon alto custom with spoiler in a 5 facing in stock at the moment. If I don't have it in stock I can order it and it can go directly to the buyer from Runyon just like they bought it from them, though perhaps at a discount from what they charge. Similarly, I am also a Morgan reseller though I am out of stock at the moment. I also have several other new and used mouthpieces I can offer at additional cost, inquire after the sale for what I have if interested. This sax comes with its original deluxe black hard case with plush lining that has seen better days. The front box compartment is missing and the inside lining is worn and torn a little. It is still sturdy as well as functional and will be more than sufficient for light use and shipping. It also has a brand new leather handle that I added.

Another note, this anti tarnish treatment on the entire horn I perform is extra work but should keep this horn cleaner and more tarnish free on all the handling and playing surfaces for some years to come. This anti tarnish treatment is fully renewable at a later time should it need to be freshened up after extended heavy playing. It should also help protect the key and body surfaces from wear and general loss of finish that occurs from rubbing and handling during play. It is applied directly after polishing and so that newly cleaned gorgeous bright sparkling shiny luster is preserved for a much greater time than it would otherwise. Without it I've seen these finishs quickly fade to dull after polishing and even start to turn black only a short time later even with minor handling or just sitting in the case!
