As you might be able to see in the pictures it has the standard Conn rolled tone holes and microtuner neck. Cosmetically this horn is in gorgeous condition. There are no dents and only one small ding in the leading edge of the bottom brace protecting the bow. The bell was pushed backward toward the body at one time and around where the bell brace meets the bell its slightly pushed in. Not that visible unless you look closely and certainly impossible for the audience to see. It is quite fixable by a competent technician should the buyer so desire. I would have had it done, but I'm backed up with other work and its such a minor item I decided to leave it for the next owner. There is very little to no scratching on the instrument even around the ring. There are only a very few small areas of very slight finish loss, only visible if you are looking closely for it. The neck is obviously original in very good to excellent condition and has an in between sized cork. An alto mouthpiece will fit over the end and a tenor sized mouthpiece will fit if its pushed all the way on toward the end. Of course it has the famous adjustable Conn neck for easy tuning. The keys appear to be nickel and show very little or no wear. There is just only the slightest wear around the right thumbrest. Silver finish is intact in the 98% plus range.
This horn was torn down, cleaned out, body and keys polished, body and keys separately treated with a powerful anti tarnish substance (better than a clear lacquer as it is transparent and non inhibiting sound-wise and doesn't peel or flake off with age), then rebuilt replacing some of its pads with new Mark VI resonator pads. This sax had been overhauled within the last fifteen to twenty five years so did not require a complete changeout of the pads and corks. Pads and corks were replaced where needed. I would say that about half the pads were replaced, so half are Mark VI style nylon resos and the other half are flat metal washer style resos.
This particular horn has gold wash inside the bell. These horns seem to have some of the best characteristics of altos and tenors all in one. The size has enough brass and length to produce a dark mellow tenor type tone. Great for all those who think the alto is too small and the tenor too big and hate transposing music into E flat or B flat. For these reasons it would make a good alternate practice horn. Shame they quit making this size altogether so many years ago.
No mouthpiece comes with this sax.
I have new Runyon C Melody mouthpieces in stock available at extra charge in
separate boxes each with a ligature and cap.
I am also a Morgan reseller and I may have one or two of those in stock.
The Morgans don't come with ligatures or caps and are generally more expensive
than the Runyons.
The Morgans are more open larger chambered aggressive pieces.
A Morgan gives this sax a more full blooded vibrant tone as a consequence.
This sax comes with its original deluxe hard case with plush lining which is
in very good original condition just like the sax.
It still has its original brass makers plate on the outside of the case.
Another note, this anti tarnish treatment on the entire horn I perform is extra work but should keep this horn cleaner and much more tarnish free for some years to come. As you can clearly see, this is one of nicest Conn striaghtneck C Melodies I have ever had the opportunity to restore!
